Fall Fashion Week 2012 in New York has come to a close. Yes, you read that correctly. For us in the real world it may seem crazy to be thinking of Fall 2012, but for the fashion world it is normal! Everything is ahead by at least a full season. When we are thinking of what to pack for this year’s spring break, the fashion world is thinking what will I be wearing next fall. There has always been somewhat of a disconnect with fashion time and real time, and there is some talk of that changing. Some designers are even offering immediate ordering after the fashion show, so in theory you could be wearing a dress from Fall 2012 in a couple of weeks. It all seems a little bit crazy, but there are some things you can learn from seeing what is in the fall forecast.
1. By being able to see what is going to be on trend for this fall you can keep your eye out for similar items that are currently in the stores, buy them and save money. Example: Coats are still a huge focus for Fall ’12. They are being shown in all shapes, sizes and materials. Use this to your advantage when you are shopping the sales now. At this time of year a lot of coats are being marked down. If you happen to find a great coat on sale you will be ahead of the game and saving money!
2. You will be knowledgeable about what stores will be filling their racks with come fall (well actually July). If you have an idea of what is being shown on the runways now you will have an idea of what you would like to buy for your fall wardrobe and not feel unprepared or overwhelmed later. Example: If there were a couple of looks (outfits) you saw online or in magazines from the shows that you liked you will have had plenty of time to plan ahead. By figuring out what you like now, you will really be able look at your clothes and see what areas you would like to add to for the upcoming season. This will save you time and money because you will already know what you want and not end up spending money on things you do not really need or want to wear.
3. There are other reasons why it can be good to know what is coming in terms of fashion, but I will leave you with this one. It is fun and inspirational! Fashion Week in itself is a spectacle! Everything from the buzz leading up to the shows, the outfits and style of the people in attendance, and to the shows themselves is something to behold. Designers are trying to make their designs more accessible to everyone and we benefit from this by being able to see pictures and read reviews moments after the actual show is finished. We can even see some of the shows streaming live online! Use this to your advantage and have fun with it. Allow yourself to dream big about the pieces you see and then use it as inspiration in your everyday life! Just because we aren’t fashion magazine editors does not mean that we can’t have fun with what we are wearing. Try it. You just might enjoy yourself!
